The environmental project was at first, nothing but a mere contest in which our class, vowed to defeat the opposing class’s project in all three area, said areas including: Topic, Design, and Presentation. Needless to say, passion took over. Our team united and assembled to bring the school’s panel of judges a presentation about what we felt was the biggest environmental issue and why. Our team was, and we will put this lightly, victorious. We chose the issue of extinction and how it holds relevance to the current generation. To put it shortly, animals are dying out at an increasingly rapid rate to a point where their extinction will and is having catastrophic consequences on our ecosystem. We thought the best way to relate this issue to our peers would be through a threefold attack plan. One, create an arsenal of posters to convey our message. Two, create a media message, not unlike a public service announcement to bring attention to this issue of extinction. Finally, three, compose a song that would not only show the create dexterity or our issue, but also, shed light on the problem through a medium that everyone universally understand, music. The components of the threefold attack plan can be seen on the wikispace via links on the environmental page. Extinction is not the most pending issue in the minds of environmentalists. Things like pollution, over-population, over-consumption, and sustainability often rank higher than species termination simply because extinction is not seen as a current problem. Mr. Masson’s fifth period class disagrees. We wanted to show people that extinction is a problem now, it’s affecting us now, and if we don’t make a effort to stop it now we won’t have a future to better. Extinction of species violates the delicate balance of the ecosystem as a whole. Similar to the domino effect, if you force enough pieces to fall the succession will become so rapid the damage will be irreprehensible. How long will it be, how many species of animals will die before the animal Homo sapien finally falls?
